President Obama threatens veto on Republicans trying to water down deficit cuts Washington Nov 22,2011-President Barack Obama stepped up pressure on Republicans to sign up to a deficit reduction deal on Monday, warning that he will deploy his presidential veto to prevent them blocking billions of dollars in automatic spending cuts that are now scheduled to start in 2013.The cuts to military and domestic spending were triggged by the collapse of the congressional supercommittee set up to reach a compromise on reducing the national deficit. The 12-member committee announced on Monday that after months of talks it was unable to bridge the deep ideological divide between Republicans and Democrats. The announcement was delayed until after Wall Street closed but the markets, anticipating the collapse, dropped sharply. The failure is almost certain to hurt a still fragile economy. The Republicans blamed the failure on the Democrats. Obama, speaking to reporters at the White House, accused the Republicans of being unwilling to give and take, and refusing “to listen to the voice of reason”.Republicans are concerned that the automatic cuts in military spending, amounting to $600bn over 10 years, will severely damage the Pentagon’s ability to maintain national security. The cuts in military spending will be matched by $600bn in domestic spending.Defence secretary Leon Panetta has described the size of the military cuts as “devastating”.Two Republican senators, John McCain and Lindsey Graham, issued a joint statement saying: “As every military and civilian defence official has stated, these cuts represent a threat to the national security interests of the United States, and cannot be allowed to occur.”

Health Center Closures Will Send Seniors, Employees Down Unknown Path LOS ANGELES( Geoff Chin) Nov 16,2011– Sandy Tang opened the Good Health Adult Day Healthcare Center (ADHC) in 2002, so her then 85-year-old mother would have a place to go for all the medical help she needed. Tang, 53, even thought the center might provide for her in her golden years, but that dream is about to end.”I thought one day I will be spending my weekday mornings at one of the centers, but now we’re not even going to make it to our twelfth anniversary,” she said.Good Health, located at the northern end of Chinatown in Los Angeles, has about 150 participants, 80 percent of them between ages 80 and 104. She said 90 percent have at least five chronic conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and dementia. “They need our help desperately, or they will end up in a nursing home very soon.”Tang’s frustration is evident as she notes there is little she could do about the state’s decision to stop funding ADHC through MediCal, the state’s Medicaid program for low-income people. She expects to run the center till the last day. She also expects dire consequences for her employees. Most of California’s over 300 ADHC centers serving 38,000 frail and disabled Californians and their families will have to close. Read More..

Affordable Care Act: Outreach to People of Color Will Be Critical Sanfrancisco Nov 03,2011-( News Report, Zaineb Mohammed) 4.7 million uninsured or underinsured Californians are expected to become eligible for healthcare under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). And according to a report published by the Greenlining Institute today, most of the newly eligible will be from communities of color. However, without an effective outreach campaign catered to the needs of ethnic communities, the benefits of the ACA may not reach those most in need. The report, “How to Ensure the Health Benefit Exchange Reaches all Californians,” outlines the challenges inherent to enrolling people of color in the Health Benefit Exchange (Exchange), a virtual marketplace where consumers will be able to compare the benefits, costs, and services of one insurance option to another. The intention is to, “reduce costs by pooling consumers together in order to increase market leverage.”The Exchange will take effect in January of 2014. Read More..
