For a price, Left may bail out govt over BJP boycott of Chidu

india govtNew Delhi Nov 23,2011-Outflanked by the BJP, which is boycotting home minister P Chidambaram over his alleged role in the 2G scandal, the UPA government is turning to the Left parties to bail it out. But it appears that the Left parties will extract their pound of flesh in the form of a censure – or at least withering criticism – of the government in Parliament over the runaway inflation.Following the washout of parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, the Congress’ trusted troubleshooter Pranab Mukherjee got into damage control mode with the Left parties, inviting CPI(M) leaders for talks.Media reports claim that the government is likely to leverage the Left parties’ discomfiture with the BJP’s personal attacks on Chidambaram to buy time for itself. CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury gave the government some wiggle room by noting the his party was not interested in targeting individual ministers, and that it did not support the BJP’s personal attack on Chidambaram. The government’s ability to leverage the division in Opposition ranks will be on test today. Yet, the Left parties themselves have given notice of an adjournment motion against the government on the runaway inflation. In his meetings with Left leaders, Mukherjee is believed to made a pitch that such a censure of the government would have unspecified “perils” and “consequences”. Read More..

President Obama threatens veto on Republicans trying to water down deficit cuts

Washington Nov 22,2011-President Barack Obama stepped up pressure on Republicans to sign up to a deficit reduction deal on Monday, warning that he will deploy his presidential veto to prevent them blocking billions of dollars in automatic spending cuts that are now scheduled to start in 2013.The cuts to military and domestic spending were triggged by the collapse of the congressional supercommittee set up to reach a compromise on reducing the national deficit. The 12-member committee announced on Monday that after months of talks it was unable to bridge the deep ideological divide between Republicans and Democrats. The announcement was delayed until after Wall Street closed but the markets, anticipating the collapse, dropped sharply. The failure is almost certain to hurt a still fragile economy. The Republicans blamed the failure on the Democrats. Obama, speaking to reporters at the White House, accused the Republicans of being unwilling to give and take, and refusing “to listen to the voice of reason”.Republicans are concerned that the automatic cuts in military spending, amounting to $600bn over 10 years, will severely damage the Pentagon’s ability to maintain national security. The cuts in military spending will be matched by $600bn in domestic spending.Defence secretary Leon Panetta has described the size of the military cuts as “devastating”.Two Republican senators, John McCain and Lindsey Graham, issued a joint statement saying: “As every military and civilian defence official has stated, these cuts represent a threat to the national security interests of the United States, and cannot be allowed to occur.”

Egypt’s cabinet offers to resign as elections thrown into doubt

Cairo Nov 22,2011-Egypt’s entire cabinet offered to resign on Monday night following three days of clashes in Cairo between the security forces and protesters seeking the reforms promised when Hosni Mubarak was removed from power. As violence abated later in the day, the news brought fireworks and celebrations in Tahrir Square as crowds swelled into the tens of thousands. The ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) appeared to have ceded control of the square amid growing criticism at home and abroad of a bloody crackdown that killed at least 33 people. “The government of Prime Minister Essam Sharaf has handed its resignation to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces,” said Mohammed Hegazy, the cabinet spokesman. Expressing “deep regret over the painful events”, it however offered to continue working until the resignation was accepted. As hopes of a successful transition to democracy faded, there were conflicting reports about whether the resignation had been accepted by the military. Analysts said the resignation offer could have been an attempt by the cabinet to save its own reputation, or could have been contrived by the SCAF to appease protesters and buy time while it considers its next move. The military – all diehards of the three-decade Mubarak era – appointed the civilian cabinet when it assumed power after the president was ousted amid tumultuous scenes in February. Scores of Egyptian diplomats condemned the violence and urged the ruling military to hold elections scheduled for Nov 28 on time. Read More..
